But you can't really tell the difference between command and demand in the songs--these jet-lagged kings and the obeisant little boy with his drum, you can't really tell if they are inspired or compelled to attend to this strange baby. And the oddness of Santa Claus is the expectation he inspires--he'll be here!! He's always here!! But when..when.. ?

I like very much your androgynous Turk "weeding out all the cultural gossip." Bob Dylan is supremely literal: from geranium kisses to silver bells, he traffics always in whatever it is he sees and feels to be real at that moment. There's not a disingenuous syllable anywhere on Christmas in the Heart, Go ahead and hate this, if you wish to, but don't get up a sophisticated, disingenuous story about sources and intentions in this record. Please toss it because you think it's tripe from soup to nuts. Or take it as Bob Dylan sings it--straight, starlit, and liquorish.

This is a fascinating tour de force. I'm chagrined to admit that I had never thought about or noticed the (now that you mention it) obvious symbiosis between the baby Jesus and Santa, though I think it's even closer than you allow, since the baby doesn't "demand attention and gifts" but commands, inspires them--at least that's the official story. On the other hand, my mother is the only person I've ever known for whom Christmas is all about the bouncing baby Jesus--as opposed to the abstract Christ child. When we were kids, she used to make him a birthday cake!

I also like the idea of imagining how this record would sound to a Neptunian. In fact, this is what I do when writing about a Dylan song--except I (arbitrarily) imagine a young Turkish singer-songwriter wannabe--sometimes a boy, sometimes a girl, depending on the song--I find it's a quick way to weed out all the cultural gossip that has attached itself to Dylan's songs.
